Linn Run

Thanks to everyone who helped to make Vanda's Linn Run Memorial Benefit Dance a great success in September, 2007!
The purpose of Vanda's Linn Run Memorial (VLRM) is to honor the memory of Vanda L. McCurdy and her love of Linn Run State Park and provide an opportunity to improve Linn Run State Park.

The VLRM has teamed with Friends of Linn Run State Park to fund the project of building Cabin 11 in Vanda McCurdy's honor. The Vanda's Linn Run Memorial Fund will work to contribute 30% of the cost of materials and construction (estimated at $15,000.00 US) for the Cabin 11 Project, which is an estimated $50,000.00 US project.

The goals of VLRM are to accomplish the following as part of the new cabin site:

  • Plant a tree with a memorial plaque at the base of the tree in Vanda McCurdy's honor
  • Place a bench next to the tree with a plaque in Vanda McCurdy's honor
  • Place a plaque inside the cabin sharing Vanda McCurdy's story at Linn Run State Park

In conjunction with the above goals, there will be a dedication ceremony once the project is completed. VLRM expects to raise the funds needed by the end of 2007 and will work with Friends of Linn Run in fundraising efforts to raise the additional funds needed to complete the Cabin 11 project in a timely manner with hopes of construction to start in 2008.

VLRM will start the project fund with a donation of $3,000.00 US to Friends of Linn Run to enable both groups to continue efforts of additional fundraising.

We look forward to working with all involved parties in this important project. Friends and family of Vanda would like to thank all those who have contributed to this project. Vanda always wanted a cabin of her own and we will be able to give that to her by all of us working together.

Thank you.

December 6, 1950 - September 5, 2006

Vanda L. McCurdy (aka Pundai) was born on December 6, 1950 in Latrobe, PA. Vanda was a fun-loving person who brought a smile to everyone's face; she was full of energy and love. Vanda always went out of her way to help friends, family and the less fortunate. She possessed a heart of gold and spread laughter to all those who knew her. Everyone that knew Vanda knew that her favorite place on earth was Linn Run State Park. Her mother took her camping with her best friend Jeannine (Nu-nu) since they were teenagers. Vanda continued the cabin vacations and created a tradition that has been passed down several generations. Outside of her many camping trips to the cabins at Linn Run, she frequented the park almost on a daily basis even when her health began to fail her. She said, "Driving up to "my" mountains is my therapy and always makes me feel better somehow." Vanda took pleasure and found peace in nature and in the little things; something we all could learn from her. Vanda's memory will live on with all of us; she was one of a kind. As Father Bob said at her service, "She was the sunshine in all of our lives."

Linn Run State Park is 612 acres and borders Forbes State Forest in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The varied topography and mixed hardwood and evergreen forest make this park a scenic place for picnicking, hiking and cabin rentals. Grove and Rock runs join to make Linn Run, an excellent trout stream that has a lovely waterfall, Adams Falls.
